Meet the RPG Blokes

Who We Are — Behind the Podcast

We are a group of long-time role-players based in London. Three of us started in the 1980s with AD&D and a pile of borrowed dice. Barry came to the hobby later — after careers, kids, and everything life throws your way. Between us, we’ve played most systems you can name: Dungeons & Dragons, Call of Cthulhu, WFRP, Vaesen, Shadowrun, and more. But what brings us together is a shared belief that roleplaying games offer something genuinely life-enhancing — and that more people, especially those coming to it later in life, deserve a way in.

The RPG Blokes podcast was born out of conversations we kept having with new players at our own Society — many of them in their 40s or 50s — who were curious but unsure. “What if I don’t understand the rules?” “What if I say something stupid?” “Am I too old to start this?” We heard these questions often — and we’d once asked them ourselves.

So we made these RPG podcasts for those people. For the ones on the edge of the hobby, wondering if it’s for them. For those returning after decades away and unsure of a way back in. For those looking for a new social outlet, or a bit of escape, or simply a creative spark that fits into the corners of a busy life.

We don’t come from professional broadcasting. We come from play. From kitchen tables and pub backrooms, Community halls and Zoom calls. We’ve run campaigns that have lasted years and one-shots that went gloriously off the rails. We’ve helped nervous first-timers roll their first character and watched them grow into confident players. That’s the real joy — not the dragons or the treasure, but the people.

Our London-based community, Dice on the Hill is one of the largest weekly RPG gatherings in the UK, and it’s still growing. We host regular games, help new players find tables, support new GMs, and run social events throughout the year. The ethos is simple: make it easy, welcoming, and fun — and never forget what it feels like to be new.

Most of us work full time. We’re shift workers, freelancers, small business owners, and parents. We’ve fit roleplaying into our lives in different ways — late-night games after work, weekend marathons, or even online sessions. We know what it’s like to be exhausted, anxious, or overwhelmed… and how sitting down for a game can lift all of that. Even when you don’t feel up to it, you leave the table feeling better. It’s not just play — it’s connection, community, and creativity.
